What earned its place, and what did not.

These are notes about two pieces of storage equipment with a specific part to play in the story. This is not a complete inventory of my home network or a list of hardware I might have bought after looking at a catalogue.

There are no affiliate links on this page. Prices and models change, but the job a product performs, its compromises and its ability to remain available during normal use matter more than a single benchmark.

Synology DS1522+

Why I considered it: I wanted storage that could hold a large media collection, present shared folders to the main server and be managed without turning every disk replacement into an independent research project.

In this setup: It handles organized media storage and shared services well, and most days it does the deeply desirable job of being uninteresting. The management software makes routine storage work understandable enough for a home user while still exposing the information needed when something goes wrong.

What to weigh: I would buy it for the storage software and everyday workflow, not because every optional network add-on is guaranteed to be painless. The NAS has been more dependable than one ambitious attempt to make its connection faster.

Why I considered it: Large file transfers made a faster NAS connection attractive, and the adapter was the supported route to a much higher link speed on this model.

In this setup: This was unreliable in my storage path. It was fast while the NAS remained reachable, which turned out to be an important qualification. Intermittent loss of the shared storage affected far more than file-copy speed because several services depended on that path.

What to weigh: Returning to the slower baseline fixed the problem. That is one adapter, one installation and one set of surrounding equipment—not a universal finding about every unit. It is still the result that determined whether this particular purchase stayed in service.

Storage choices

Why buy a NAS instead of adding drives to a server?

A NAS is a separate computer dedicated to keeping files available over the network. I wanted one place to organize larger shared data while leaving the main server free to run applications. A commercial NAS also gives a home user an approachable interface for disk health, shared folders and routine storage work.

Adding drives directly to the server can be cheaper, avoids a network dependency and may be the better answer for a single machine. The NAS earns its extra cost and complexity only when separate storage management and shared access are useful. My faster-network experiment was a reminder that adding yet another dependency must improve the whole job, not just a speed-test result.

Network choices

Do I need a managed switch or a large gateway?

For many homes, the router supplied by the internet provider and a modest unmanaged switch are enough. A managed switch becomes useful when you need visibility into wired links, separate groups of devices or power supplied over network cables. A more capable gateway can centralize network rules and reporting. Both add cost, update work and settings that somebody must understand.

Before buying either, count the devices and describe the problem you need it to solve. If the issue is weak Wi-Fi in one room, relocating or adding an access point may help more than replacing the entire gateway. If the issue is a single slow device, first inspect its cable and negotiated link speed. Buying a larger box is satisfying; it is not always a diagnosis.

Server choices

How much computer does a media server need?

A modest computer may be plenty when playback devices can play the original files directly. A stronger processor or suitable video hardware matters when the server must convert video for several incompatible devices at once. That conversion uses power and can affect picture quality, so buying capacity for it should follow an actual look at the playback sessions.

The alternatives include choosing more compatible files, using a better playback device or limiting simultaneous conversions. Those changes can be cheaper and more effective than a new server. I am leaving the exact processor model off this page because its specification does not explain the storage lesson and a partial parts list gives a misleadingly complete picture of the private setup.

What I value

Reliability, visibility and a clear rollback.

I value equipment that performs its role consistently, exposes enough useful information to diagnose failure and can be returned to a known working state after a change.

Maximum speed matters when the workload can use it. It ranks below predictable availability. The network adapter on this page established that policy with a demonstration lasting substantially longer than the installation guide.

What is not ranked

No artificial top-ten list.

This page does not rank products I have never owned in order to create the appearance of comprehensive expertise. Research-based buying guides may appear later, but they will be labelled as research and supported by current manufacturer information.

For now, a smaller list with real experience is more useful than a large list in which every item is mysteriously “perfect for most people.” Most people have not agreed on a budget, a network or what they are trying to accomplish.
